Birthing Classes: Lamaze Vs Hypnobabies Vs Bradley

Giving birth to a teeny-tiny human is no joke. Having fears and anxiety regarding the whole process is pretty natural. Thankfully there are birthing classes that can help you deal with your fears and prepare you for labor and childbirth.

From learning how to tell you’re in labor, to different delivery methods, to the basics of breastfeeding and tips on caring for your infant, you, as a parent-to-be, get loads of useful information in the form of exercises, discussions, and lectures when you take a birthing class.

But there are tons of different types of childbirth classes out there. And I’ve seen many parents-to-be getting super confused about which one should they take.

Here at She Births Bravely, we help thousands of moms prepare for birth through our free online resources and our own birthing class, the Healthy Start Birth Prep Challenge.

But, if you’re like me, you like to explore all your options, so I put together this guide to help you compare all the classes out there so that you can find the BEST childbirth class for you.

This article presents all the details on the most common birthing classes that will make the whole process of finding the right one for you easy.

Why Take A Birthing Class?

Birthing classes can make birth easier, safer and more rewarding. You learn skills to cope with the intensity of labor as well as how to make educated decision and feel more confident about about your own ability to birth.

Beyond gaining confidence and knowledge, the American Academy of Obstetrics and Gynecology has reported that moms who took childbirth education courses were better prepared for labor and less likely to need inductions, interventions, or have an unplanned c-section.

Here Are The Best Birthing Classes On The Market

I have amazing things to say about each of these styles of birthing classes. In my experience as a doula and birth coach, I have seen moms have positive and successful birthing experiences with each of these classes. Here’s what you need to know to pick the right one for you.

The Famous Lamaze Technique: Best All-Around Birthing Class

If you ask your friends to find a childbirth class for you, most will probably suggest Lamaze.

For years when any of my friends asked me to suggest a great birthing class, I definitely suggested it. Why? Because I’ve personally taken the course during my pregnancy and trust me, it includes some excellent rhythmic breathing exercises that keep you oxygenated during labor and helps reduce anxiety and the fear of pain associated with labor.

But, Lamaze is not only about breathing, as many people perceive. With Lamaze, you also get some solid, research-based information about pregnancy and help you learn the different ways to cope with labor and delivery.

Overall Course Objective:

This technique uses six simple birth practices, based on evidence and research to equip you with the best practices for healthy and safe childbirth.

One of these practices says you should avoid anything that is not necessary during labor or birth medically. Due to this, many people believe this technique prohibits having an epidural. But that’s so not true. You can still prepare for birth, even when planning on using an epidrual. This class really aims to assist you in making the right decisions for you.

Who Is It Best for?

If you’re someone like me who prefers smaller and private classes, this course is perfect for you. Many of my friends have also attended these classes, and honestly, I would say it will suit anyone, any parents-to-be, of course.

Availability:

Lamaze classes available in most regions. And even if it’s not available in your area, you can also opt for online classes. All the classes, be it in any region or area, are given by their highly qualified instructors known as Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educators (LCCE). You can easily find if an instructor is available in your area through the Lamaze official website. Options of online classes are also available on their website.

Cost:

One of the best things about Lamaze classes is they won’t break the bank. Although prices vary region to region and based on the instructor, the cost ranges between $50-$350.

Duration:

Lamaze classes are typically six to eight weeks long, with a total of 12 hours. You can also complete some of their series over a weekend.

Pros:

  • Budget-friendly
  • Lamaze classes are based on research and evidence-based information
  • Classes not crowded; usually includes only around 8-10 couples
  • Classes are given only by Lamaze certified instructors

Cons:

6-8 weeks duration may seem too long to stay focused on the program

Hypnobirthing Method: The Simplest Technique To Give Birth In A Sleep-like Mode

hypnobirthing birth class

Hypnosis while giving birth seems crazy, right? Well, it’s actually not. In fact, it’s among the most effective ways to manage pain associated with labor and delivery. Hypnobirthing is based on hypnosis, and it is a well-known method for managing pain, easing anxiety, and reducing fears during labor and birth.

People have been using hypnosis during birth for ages, but the credit of HypnoBirthing goes to Marie MOongan as she was the first to use this exact term in one of her books called HypnoBirthing: A Celebration of life.

Overall Course Objective

Its basic purpose is to help moms-to-be deal with the fears and anxiety regarding labor or delivery, which is pretty common, to be honest.

The concept behind this program is to help a pregnant woman relax her mind and body so that her muscles can aid in giving painless birth. This method’s core techniques include practicing and learning controlled breathing by taking deep breaths through your nose, meditation by visualizing something like the feeling of holding your baby in your arms, or some dream place you want to go to, and focusing on positive thoughts. Some programs also use relaxing music.

Who Is It Best For?

Hypnobirthing classes can be taken by anyone, but it’s best for those who have a history of panic attacks or have suffered from some birth-related trauma. One of my friends who was really afraid of labor and delivery also found Hypnobirthing classes extremely useful.

Availability

The good thing about this method is that many certified Hypnobirthing instructors are available all around the globe.

Cost

The average cost of Hypnobirthing is $275-$350; prices vary based on the instructor. Some instructors charge as high as $900-$1100 for private classes.

Duration

The original hypnobirthing method, also commonly known as the Mongan method, consists of five classes, with each class being two and a half-hour long, which makes the total duration of the program 12 hours. But, different instructors offer a different number of classes, with many offering four classes of two hours each.

***Here’s a fun fact about this method: many celebrities, including Angelina Jolie and Jessica Alba, have used this technique to get prepared for labor and childbirth.

Pros

  • Hypnobirthing takes you to a super relaxed and clam state just as if you are daydreaming
  • Gives you the power of being more in control
  • Reduces the probability of post-natal depression
  • Gives confidence to mothers
  • Reduces labor time

Cons

  • Doesn’t include any tips about how to specifically deal with the pain outside of hypnosis
  • Might not work for women whose deliveries don’t go as expected
  • Can be costly, depending on region and instructor

Hypnobabies Birthing Classes: Another Great Program Based on Hypnosis

You must’ve guessed by looking at the name of the technique that it involves hypnosis. Similar to Hypnobirthing, this program teaches the physiology of labor and consists of a basic course on labor and the complications that might occur during childbirth. But, if both techniques include hypnosis, then why are both different programs? It’s because they actually differ.

Unlike Hypnobirthing, Hypnobabies involves medical-grade hypnosis techniques called hypno-anesthesia, made specifically for birth and labor. This course was actually created by a hypnobirthing instructor who thought the program was missing some major elements. So he created a new program and named it what we know as Hypnobabies

Overall Course Objective:

The course aims to help pregnant women give natural, joyful, and peaceful birth using medical-grade hypnosis but with more mobility during birth.

These classes will teach you self-hypnosis so you can train your subconscious to give birth in a more relaxed, peaceful, and calm state. One of the things you’ll love about this course is that it will also teach your partners how to give you the support you need. The course involves hypnosis books, workbooks, and hypnosis audio tracks.

Who Is It Best For?

It’s a great course for anyone who likes to give a peaceful birth using hypnosis but still wishes to be more aware and “stay awake” during childbirth. It is also perfect for single moms as well as for couples.

Availability:

Hypnobabies classes are available in many countries, including the USA, Germany, Canada, and Singapore. You can conveniently find if classes are available in your area through their website. All classes are given by their trained instructors. You can also opt for remote home-study classes that are available in many regions.

Cost:

The average cost of hypnobabies classes is $375—private classes costs around $900.

Duration:

It is a six weeks course consisting of six classes with a total of 18 hours; 3 hours per week.

Pros:

  • Hypno-moms use very few or no drugs
  • Shortens labor and birth time
  • Gives you the power to be more in control of your birthing experience
  • Consists of a detailed curriculum on childbirth

Cons:

  • Private classes are quite expensive
  • You cannot listen to audio tracks during cooking, walking, running, or any other activity
  • Does not present alternative labor coping strategies

The Bradley Method: The Most Natural Way To Give Birth

Bradley method birthing class

Founded by Dr. Robert Bradely in 1947, this method is by far the most natural way to give birth. The course’s basis is that most women don’t need any medication like pain killers during labor and childbirth because it is a natural process. It involves giving birth naturally with the help of a trained coach (mostly husband or partner), relaxation, proper education, nutrition, and exercise.

You might’ve heard of the time when husbands were strictly not allowed to be with their wives during childbirth, and doctors used to strap women to the bed to ‘help’ them give birth. This method is the opposite of all of this. It was created as a better solution to the choas that was childbirthing at this time. It aims to provide a comfortable environment for the mother during birth and involves the partner’s support while the woman is giving birth.

Overall Course Objective:

The objective of the course is to teach expectant mothers how to give birth naturally by using some simple techniques such as breathing, relaxation, and exercise. They also prepare a birthing partner to be a doula or an excellent support person for mom.

These birthing classes will empower you to be more in tune with your body and trust it while giving birth. You’ll learn the importance of nutrition and the way it affects your baby when it’s in your womb, the need for exercise during pregnancy, and different stages of labor. And your partner will also learn how to be a good coach during childbirth.

Who Is It Best For?

It is great for any couple who is looking for natural, vaginal childbirth. Women who are already told by their obstetrician/gynecologist that C-Section is their only option may not benefit from it as this childbirth method involves medical intervention. It is also perfect for anyone who wants a partner led or partner supported birth.

Availability:

This method is taught instructions trained only through the American Academy of Husband-Coached Childbirth™. These instructors are available widely, and you can check the availability in your area through their official website.

Cost:

The cost varies area to area and also depends on the instructors, but the average cost is somewhere around $400.

Duration:

The Bradley method is taught over the course of 12 weeks. Typically classes are about an hour each.

Pros:

  • More than 80% of Bradley-trained mothers have given unmedicated birth
  • This is a comprehensive course that covers all aspects of childbirth preparations
  • Involves very few couples to give more focused training
  • Teaches the partner to give proper support during childbirth

Cons:

  • Very long course, which makes it difficult to stay focused
  • Not suitable for those who already know they’re going to have a C-section

Birthing From Within: A Combination Of Medical And Spiritual Childbirth Events

This method touches both the medical and emotional aspects associated with giving birth. It gives you the ability of self-expression and reduces the risk of potential trauma.

Overall Course Objective:

The course’s core purpose is to equip you with the power of using your body and wisdom along with the medical options to prepare for childbirth.

These birthing classes specifically focus on self-compassion and resilience. It also involves sharing of beliefs, journaling, art sessions, and visualizations.

Who Is It Best For?

If you are into self-discovery or want to give birth by making decisions that are in accordance with your family and cultural values, this is the course for you.

Availability:

These classes are given by trained childbirth educators and doulas available worldwide, including the US and Canada. You can find an educator or doula in your area from the directory available online. In-home personal sessions are also offered by some mentors.

Duration:

Typically, these classes are around 10-18 hours.

Pros:

  • Personalized for each couple
  • Minimizes the risk of potential trauma
  • Extensive course

Cons:

Not for those who like to gain scientific knowledge regarding childbirth. Most of this class is science based, but it is not the focus in any way.

What’s the Right Time to Begin Birthing Classes

It depends on the course/program you choose to take. Most courses are designed to be taken in the late second trimester or at the start of the third trimester. Some courses also offer early classes, so if you feel you need classes early, you can opt for such courses.

How Do I Find A Specific Birthing Class?

Hopefully, this article helped you get clear on what the different types of birthing classes are available. Depending on your own personal needs, any of these classes could be an excellent fit. Once you know which style you want, choose if you want in person or online.

You can see a list of our suggested online birthing classes here. Then simply google the type of class with the phrase ‘near me’. That would look like Hypnobirthing classes near me, and you will be able to see what is available in your area.

Are Childbirth Classes Covered By Insurance?

What if your childbirth education class was covered by insurance?

Here at She Births Bravely, we help thousands of moms prepare for their upcoming birth every month. Either through our free resources here on the blog, our own 8-week childbirth preparation class, or by referring moms to other online childbirth classes that might align with their own values and personality.

For every mom, there is a right childbirth education class!

But, What Happens When You Look At The Cost Of A Class And You Think, Oh Crap, That’s Expensive?

I know, when you are preparing for a baby, you have a lot of things on your mind and a lot of demands on your wallet.

Did you know that your childbirth education classes may be covered by insurance? And that you can use your flex savings or health savings accounts to pay any difference?

How Do You Get Your Childbirth Education Class Covered By Your Insurance?

The first thing you have to do is call your insurance and find out what you are eligible for.

Grab your insurance card.

On the back there is a number to call.

Call them.

Tell them you want to take a childbirth class and ask what the process is to have part or all of your class covered.

They will be able to tell you what and how much they will pay towards childbirth education classes. Most insurance plans cover chidbirth classes either partially or in full.

What Is The Normal Process To Have My Childbirth Education Class Covered By Insurance?

Once you know how much your insurance will cover for you for your class, you need to know how to do it.

Most of the time you will pay out of pocket for the class. Then you will have to submit a form and your receipt to your insurance company.

If you purchase the Healthy Start Birth Prep course you will receive an email immediately that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

This email will also have the relevant codes on it that your insurance company will use to properly submit your claim.

What Codes Do I Need To Give To My Insurance Company To Have My Childbirth Education Covered By Insurance?

There are two pieces of information you need to give your insurance company when asking about coverage.

This is the CPT code so they can appropriately document the purpose and the diagnosis code, that tells them why you should be covered.

The insurance CPT code for childbirth classes is: S9436. You may also need this: Diagnosis code Z32.2, which is for childbirth education.

Will My Class Be Fully Covered By Insurance?

Unfortunately, there is no way to know without calling your insarnce provider directly. But it’s good to know that, yes, childbirth education is covered either fully or partially in mosts states and on most plans.

But, at the end of the day, every plan and state is different.

For example, some plans only cover up to a certain dollar amount, such as $90 for first-time moms and $45 for second-time (or more) moms.

Other plans will cover the entire thing.

It’s up to you to call your insurance and find out what you personally are eligible for.

What If I Don’t Have Insurance Or Money To Pay For A Course?

Hey, I’ve been there! Preparing for a baby is expensive. I do not know what your options are for other classes, but when it comes to the Healthy Start Birth Prep, we have several options for moms who can’t afford classes, but really need to participate. Reach out and ask us about our options for brand ambassadors or need-based scholarships.

Send your inquiry to contact @ shebirthsbravely.com

Why Should I Spend Money On Childbirth Education Classes?

Childbirth classes can be an investment that protects not only your health but your financials as well.

Here are just some of the benefits of taking a proper and thorough childbirth education class:

  • Reduce your risk of c section
  • Reduce the risks of preterm birth
  • Decrease chances of tearing
  • Have a shorter pushing stage
  • Reduce the risk of postpartum depression
  • Need fewer interventions and technological assistance (like forceps or pitocin) as you birth
  • Increase the odds your baby will be in a good position
  • Learn how to cope with pain
  • Increase your knowledge on what is happening at every stage of labor
  • Advocate for the best experience possible for you
  • Deeper bonding and strengthening of your family
  • Make connections and friends that can support you in this new stage of life

When you have a less complicated birth, birth is also less expensive, which means that you save money in the long run as well.

What Makes A Good Birthing Class?

You can check out of full list on what makes a good childbirth education class here.

What If I Don’t Want To Prepare For Birth Through A Class?

That’s fine! Classes can be mega empowering and a great way to connect. But sometimes you bare too busy, too broke, or truly just need a light refresher. If you prefer a DIY approach, we have a list of the best books and documentaries to prepare you for an amazing birth here.

When Should I Start A Birthing Class?

A good quality birthing class will meet for 1 to 2 hours for 5 to 10 weeks. If you can take it in half a day on a Saturday, it is probably more about helping you be a good patient then developing birth skills.

Because of this, you should start classes early. I recommend beginning as early as 20 weeks. However, you can take classes at any time. I’ve seen moms take classes and join before they are even pregnant or sign up at 38 weeks and cram as much information as possible.

But, starting at 20 weeks gives you plenty of time to not just take in the information, but to also practice any skills you need to develop for birth. Not to mention, that one of the most crucial ways you will reduce your risks and improve safety for yourself and your baby during your pregnancy is through your nutrition.

Most childbirth classes will prepare you thoroughly about what to eat. This knowledge  is better gained sooner than later!

To Summarize, Are Birthing Classes Covered By Insurance?

Yes, most insurance plans cover birthing classes (called childbirth education) either fully or partially. To find out what exactly is covered by your plan, call the customer service number on the back of your card. Give them the code and diagnosis code below:

The insurance CPT code for childbirth classes is: S9436.

Diagnosis code Z32.2, which is for childbirth education.

Anything not covered by insurance can be paid for with a health savings or flexible savings account or out of pocket.

I’m so excited for you to birth and hope you have an amazing experience!

Until next time,

Suzzie Vehrs

How To Push A Baby Out Fast

Have you ever wondered why it takes some moms hours to push out their babies and other babies seems to pop out in one push?

Me too.

As a doula, this is one of the questions I hear often. How do I push a baby out fast?

Now, usually, I try to provide scientifically, peer reviewed evidence in my answers, but for this question, I turned to moms that have actually had really fast births and asked them about what they did to prepare, what was going on in their head and what they were experiencing during birth and especially pushing during birth.

So, if you want to push a baby out fast, or to learn from moms who have, this is the place for you!

*Pushing A Baby Out Fast Discalimer

Before I get into the details of exactly what moms who push their baby out fast do differently in birth, I want to preface by saying that every labor is different. Having a shorter labor and pushing stage is caused by many things. For example, your baby’s position, your comfort with birth, your body and so many other factors can affect how long it takes to push out your baby.

I offer these tips as interesting observations, not a promise that if you do these things your birth will unfold in the same way theirs did. Unfortunately, the one thing I know about birth, is that it is not predictable like that. Yes, you can influence it, but after preparing and doing your part, developing a sense of detachment or a role of exploring and enjoying your own story and how it unfolds is healthy.

4 Stories of Moms Who Had Super Fast Births And Shared Their Tips With You

So who are these moms that I got these tips from?

mom hodling baby with super fast labor

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission, at no extra cost to you, if you make a purchase through a link. I participate in the Amazon associates program as well as others.

Mandy arrived at the hospital ready to have her baby. Once she was checked in, the nurse suggested she get in the tub because she ‘might have a while.’ Mandy was only in the tub for an hour when she said “I’m having the baby now!” The nurse said, “no, that’s not possible, you need more time.” Mandy isn’t one to listen to what she’s told, so she started pushing and delivered her baby in the tub at the hospital before the OB could even get in the room!

Sarah had her first baby in under 5 hours from start to finish. She was expecting a quick second birth when she reached out to me. She was overwhelmed by how fast it as the first time around and was prepared for the second, which happened even faster in three hours!

Mel was having her 3rd baby. Her first two came quickly. I was there putting together her labor tub when she said she thought she must be close based on her previous experiences. Her midwives told her they thought she had a ways to go and they would come back in the morning to check on her and to call if anything changed. Mel thought she was in active labor, the midwives thought she was way to calm and only dilated to a 3. Less than 2 hours later she gave birth with her husband catching the baby as the midwives rushed back to her.

Abbey called me to come to her birth saying she thought she was in active labor. Upon joining her, I realized she was not just not in active labor, but in transition. I called the midwives who joined us less than 30 minutes later, just in time to be there as Abbey pushed a baby out in 3 contractions.

These are the moms with super fast labors from whom I got this advice.

*Please note, these are atypical and very fast births, most women to not push their babies out this quickly. I personally had to push for 4 hours, not one or two contractions, and that is totally fine as well!

I asked each of these moms what was going through their head during their birth. Did they do anything to help their labor along? THe following tips come directly from moms who did push their babies out fast!

How To Push A Baby Out Fast – 5 Tips From Moms Who Did It

Tip 1 – Mind the time between contractions

how to push a baby out fast - dad helping mom relax between contractions

The time between contractions is less time than the time during contractions. So while contractions take a significant amount of energy and focus, making the most of the time between contractions can help. This can look like connecting with your partner, receiving a gentle massage, enjoying something to eat, or focusing on something you love that lets you enter a place of surrender more easily.

Tip 2 – Don’t focus on what the contraction feels like

Knowing what a contraction feels like and how to cope is important work BEFORE birth. But, once birth starts, these moms focus on what the contractions is doing for them. They pay attention to how the contraction is opening their cervix, and even more importantly, how they can feel their baby shifting and moving down with each contraction.

Tip 3 – Develop a deep belief of birth’s safety before it starts

how to push a baby out fast - developing trust in birth

This one may take some emotional and educational work. These moms all came to a place where they felt safe birthing. This meant developing knowledge of birth and how it is physiologically sound through reading birth literature, watching birth videos and taking birth classes.

But they also internalized their belief that they could do this well before birth started. This second part is often glossed over by basic classes, as it requires internal and emotional work that many of us just don’t have guidance on. You’re in luck though – helping moms sort through the emotional side of birth is exactly why I wrote my book Divine Birth.

Tip 4 – They focus on affirmations surrounding baby

Building on the last tip, the words these moms use during birth are different than the words most moms I work with during birth have. Most moms are focused (and rightly so!) on affirmation like “I am strong enough to do this” or “just one more.”

These moms with super fast births focused on affirmations like “I want my baby now!” “I can feel my baby moving down” “I’m having my baby!”. Every labor sensation brought them closer emotionally to the point of holding their baby and they had a strong focus on the fact that the sensation of labor meant that it was working and that the contractions were bringing them their baby.

Tip 5 – They do their Kegels

Kegel exercises are pelvic floor exercises that help tone and shape the vaginal canal. Women who do kegels during pregnancy are at lower risk for tearing and at least anecdotally, from the moms I’ve spoken with, can help the pushing stage be more efficient.

However, what most women are taught about Kegels is almost entirely incorrect. If you are going to start practicing Kegels, do them in an exercise program like Every Mother, where you will learn how to engage your entire pelvic floor and find out about the most common Kegel Myths and what you need to know instead to benefit from these surprisingly effective exercises.

Will An Exercise Program Really Help Me Push My Baby Out Fast?

The truth is, there are far too many factors to your birth to say that doing one thing on it’s own is guaranteed to change how quickly you will birth. However, it is a fact that a properly cared for pelvic floor is less likely to tear during birth, and if you do your kegels, you are less likely to need an episiotomy.

I personally love recommending the Every Mother System to moms who want to strengthen their pelvic floor and protect their abdominal system as the program is made by a physical therapist who has really done her work to help you learn functional movement and how to use these muscles the right way. Which, in my book, is a total win.

It will likely help you have a better birth, and will definitely help you be more comfortable during pregnancy. Have any questions? Send them my way!

How To Actually Push When You’re Pushing Out A Baby

Okay, so you may be thinking, wait, none of those things actually talk about how o push a baby out. It’s all about mindset and your body just doing it. And yes, for these women, their body took over and just did it. Many women experience this and it is called the fetal ejection reflex.

However, not all women experience the fetal ejection reflex. And many women need to be told how to push.

When you are pushing your baby out, you need to find the inner layer of your abdominals. (remember how I mentioned every mother above – that exercise program will 100% teach you how to do this!)

These are the muscles that are the deepest layer or your abs, and help you have good posture. If you breathe out and pull your belly button to the spine with your breath, you are using the right muscles.

Second, you need to find your pelvic floor muscles that you use during a kegel exercise.

These are the muscle groups you will be pushing your baby out with.

Essentially, you are going to use these muscles, in your gut, and your pelvic floor to push.

So, when you push your baby out, you will relax your neck, jaw, shoulders, and all your energy will go down into your gut and then imagine shooting your breath and your baby out.

I know, it sounds weird, but the best way to do it is to imagine all your energy going down and out. You are pushing with your abdominal muscles and your pelvic floor is relaxing and releasing or helping with the push.

It sounds hard, and you can lightly practice before labor, but the truth is, once you’re in labor and baby is pushing down on your vaginal canal, you will be able to feel this clearly.

The TL/DR Of How To Push A Baby Out Fast

While you cannot gaurentee a short labor, learning how to relax and release during birth is imperitive. Know that every contraction is bringing your baby to you and fill each contraction with that intention. Have you forus be on the real fact that your baby is moving down and pay attention to that as much as possible instead of the sensation of the contractions.

Overall, approach your birth with a sense of curiosity and discovery. It may unfold just as you wish, and it may have twists and turns that will keep things interesting and give you a great story to tell your little one in the years to come.

First, you need to determine if your milk supply is actually low. If your baby is gaining enough weight on breastmilk alone, you are producing more than enough. In fact, most breastfeeding mothers produce a third percent more milk than their baby really needs.

Also keep in mind your baby’s stomach is the size of a cherry on day one, expanding to the size of a large egg by 1 month. They do not need that much milk to get them full.

Hence, it may seem as if you aren’t producing enough milk for your baby for those first few weeks, even if you are.

I Needed To Boost My Milk Supply Fast Too

However, I get it. I struggled with my milk supply majorly…. until my midwife told me I was unable to breastfeed my baby. Turns out I proved them wrong, as I breastfed my daughter until she was 10 months old.

How did I do it you ask? Well, I followed these tips below and some more which can be found here.

If you are worried your baby is not eating enough, is not gaining enough weight, or you would like to start building a freezer stash, this post is for you.

10 Super-Fast Ways To Boost Your Milk Supply

1. Breastfeed on Demand

Breastfeed whenever your baby is hungry or needs to be soothed.

Letting baby suck on your breast releases hormones that trigger your breast to “let-down” milk.

So, typically, the more you breastfeed, and your breasts are stimulated, the more milk you produce!

Pediatricians recommend breastfeeding your baby 8-12 times a day, or around every 2 hours to establish and maintain a good milk supply. However, more or fewer sessions do not indicate any problems with you or with your baby.

Follow your baby’s cues. If they are hungry feed them until they are satisfied. And basically, continue this for the next few weeks, because that’s what newborns do! Eat, Poop, Sleep, Repeat!

2. Get Pumping!

If your baby is having trouble sucking hard enough to start a let-down, give the handy dandy breast pump a try.

Now, what will pumping do? It will stimulate your breasts to create more milk, hence increasing your milk supply.

Most hospitals or clinics will have breast pumps you can rent, which makes it cheaper to try it out for a while.

I bought my own pump from amazon, and it was a life-changer for me. Whether on trips, on short outings, or even leaving my baby with others for a little while. It gave me more flexibility during those breastfeeding months.

So, when in doubt, pump it out!

3. Massage your Breasts

A tip I used until the end of my breastfeeding journey was massaging your breasts while breastfeeding.

Massaging your breasts helps empty your milk ducts more, signaling your body to create even more milk. This can also help if your baby is having trouble sucking hard enough to empty your breasts.

How to Massage your Breasts:

-before breastfeeding, apply a warm, wet compress to your breasts.

-gently massage from the top of the breast towards your nipple.

-cup your breast and using your thumb, massage in downward and circular strokes to encourage milk to flow to your nipple.

A little tip: This method can be an absolute lifesaver when you have mastitis or engorged breasts! It’s like a little spa treatment for your girls!

3. Offer Both Sides When Breastfeeding

Pretty self-explanatory, offer your baby both sides when breastfeeding. Let your baby finish the first side and offer the second side when done.

If your baby tends to fall asleep during nursing, try switching sides more regularly and holding your baby in different positions to get their little brains working!

5. The Right Latch is Key!

Getting the right latch will save your breasts from screaming pain and enable your baby to drink more efficiently and comfortably.

Your baby needs to be able to drink your milk for you to maintain and up your milk supply.

Here are some signs of a good latch:

-baby is sucking on more than your nipple, including surrounding areola.

-baby’s lips are turned out (like a fish)

-nose and chin of baby are touching your breast

-no clicking or smacking noises

-you hear baby swallowing milk

-nipples may be tender at first, but never in pain.

You will know if you have a shallow or wrong latch if you are in lots of pain. Breastfeeding may make your breasts sore and tender, but they should never be so painful you want to cry.

If this is the case, gently stick a clean and washed finger in between the corner of your baby’s mouth to gently remove them from the breast without pulling them off. And then try again.

Little confession… at the beginning of my breastfeeding journey I had no clue what I was doing and would often need to re-latch up to 7 times until we got it right. Practice until you get it. You and your baby will be so much more comfortable, trust me.

6. Get Rest and Reduce Stress!

It is said that stress negatively impacts your milk supply. While stress may not impact your milk supply directly, it does impact it in other ways. Not drinking enough, eating enough, or sleeping enough due to stress causes your body to drop your milk supply.

So, for those first one to two weeks, take a nursing vacation. And I literally mean it.

Take your baby to bed with you and do nothing all day except focus on nursing. You can eat of course, but you get my point.

You will see wonders happen to your baby, your milk supply, and to your overall well-being and mood too!

7. Drink, Drink, Drink!

As a breastfeeding mom, it is easy to get caught up in your motherly duties and forget to drink. However, getting enough water intake is crucial for you, your baby, and your milk.

It is said that 88% of breastmilk is made up of water.

Considering the average non-breastfeeding woman needs 8-9 glasses of water a day. Breastfeeding women should drink around 3 glasses more, totaling to 12 glasses.

However, don’t force any liquids, usually drinking to satisfy your thirst is enough for most moms. If you are noticing your supply dropping, try upping your water intake by 3-4 glasses a day and see if you notice any changes.

8. Focus on Eating Supply Boosting Foods

Nature has blessed us with tons of rich, nutritious, lactation boosting foods.

Some common ones that boost lactation are:

-Barley

-Barley malt

-Oats

-Whole grains

-Brewer’s yeast

-Papaya

-Dark green vegetables

-Nuts and seeds

-Ginger and garlic

Remember, a well-balanced diet is key. So do not overdo it with these foods. On the other hand, adding these foods to your daily diet may help you boost your milk supply naturally!

9. Essential Oils to the Rescue!

Essential oils can be very beneficial in trying to boost your milk supply naturally. Keep in mind that essential oils are medicinal, meaning you should always consult your health practitioner before consuming any essential oils.

Some essential oils can also reduce your milk supply, so make sure to steer clear of those!

What brand you use is totally up to you. I chose to for with DoTerra Oils for quality sake. However, make sure the brand you choose is certified, safe to consume in regulated amounts, and Grade A or completely pure.

Some essential oils that help with milk production are:

-fennel seed

-basil

-dill

-lavender

-and geranium

10. Herbs and Supplements

Herbs and Supplements are such easy ways to naturally boost your milk supply. Whether you drink them in teas (most common) or consume them in other ways, they can provide amazing benefits to your supply.

Fenugreek- the most common herb used to boost lactation in women. Mainly consumed in lactation teas.

Blessed Thistle- usually combined with fenugreek in milk boosting teas.

And some other common ones: stinging nettle, fennel, alfalfa, and brewer’s yeast.

*Remember to always check in with a health practitioner before consuming herbs or supplements when pregnant or breastfeeding. They are still a form of medicine and when consumed in wrong amounts can cause side effects.
